The Heart of Durban
A perfect combination of old and new. 90 years of experience with innovation and passion.
The DJC is a beautiful, historic landmark, and was built and opened in May 1931, as a sports and recreational facility, out of necessity, due to fact that Jewish people were not permitted to join sports clubs in Durban.
Gardens include only indigenous plants and trees.
The DJC is passionate about reducing her carbon footprint, and has partnered with Don’t Waste to increase recycling.
Use of JoJos to collect, store and use rainwater.
Grand staircase leads you into a large, welcoming foyer, to the various venue areas.
The foyer can be used as the welcome area for functions in the Main Hall.
For the last 90 years the two large halls, affectionately known as the Main and Minor Halls, have been used for amongst others, theatre productions, banquets, weddings and examination venues.
One of the many proud items that add to the uniqueness of the DJC is the coiled spring floor in the Main Hall. It is one of only two such floors in Durban. It is literally designed for dancing!!
It is newly renovated, but retains her original art deco glass mosaics and ceiling.
Fully air-conditioned, separate entrances for passage, and side parking.
