History of

The DJC

The DJC is a beautiful, historic landmark that opened in May 1931 as a sports and recreational facility. It was established out of necessity, as Jewish people were not permitted to join sports clubs in Durban at the time.

Beyond its role as a sports venue, this “grand dame” has been a significant part of Durban’s history. During World War II, it served as a canteen and resting facility for over 2 million soldiers and even hosted Queen Elizabeth II, along with other royalty and dignitaries.

In March 2020, the DJC once again played a vital role in supporting the Durban community. During the Covid-19 lockdown, it became a residence for the staff of an old-age home, a coffee station for SAPS and essential workers, a testing site, and a quarantine facility for Covid-19 positive patients.
